Riddell is dropping a throwback for the next limited edition series, the 1989-95 throwback.
The 49ers wore this helmet design for only seven years, the shortest run of their three SF logos, shown below. Interestingly, the only throwback the 49ers have worn is from this era. It was worn in 2005-08 and again in 2018 through the present.

The helmet was originally made available as a “throwback” in the 1999 6-piece NFC west team set. Other limited editions that have factory counterparts from previous production runs include the 1966-69 Falcons, 1993-96 Broncos, 1966 Dolphins, 1983-2011 Seahawks, 1976-96 Buccaneers, 1981-96 Oilers (Titans), and 1981-99 Giants.

This the fourth 2025 limited edition helmet and 19th overall (including 2024). In the limited edition series, there have been 10 throwbacks and 9 alternates. This is only the second speed style helmet Riddell has manufactured for the 49ers. Only the Raiders and Chiefs have one speed style helmet.
I’m surprised to see that this helmet didn’t sell out the first day like the last two did. It is currently listed as “Low Stock” now. Actually, the three remaining from the Limited Edition of 2000 are now down to being listed as Low Stock too. After missing out on the white Vikings helmet when I went to order it a few hours after its release (had to order it through ebay), I ordered the last two immediately as they were posted on Riddell’s website. I’ve noticed that they’ve been sending the 2025 helmets via FedEx rather than the USPS. Got the Eagles, Giants, and 49ers helmets all in under 48 hours after ordering them.

The 49ers helmet is still available as of today, albiet marked as “low stock.” I think a few things happened. First, a few sellers planning on making a profit overbought with the 2025 limited editions. Many are still available on ebay, but they will eventually sell. But they backed off a little. Second, Riddell put a limit of 24 with the limited edition 49ers helmet. I think a few sellers purchased as many as 99 (the previous limit as far as I could tell). Third, the 49ers throwback is so similar to the other 49ers helmets. It’s not as distinct, so less casual buyers purchase it. Serious collectors either make their own or already have the throwback in another style. If the next drop is an alternate – like the Texans or Broncos – I wouldn’t surprised if it sells out pretty fast. Thanks for the comment!

Good point. The 49ers Throwback looks nearly identical. Even when I’ve seen a game where they wear that helmet and uniform I may not always catch it. The drop shadow numbers on the uniforms are usually the biggest clue they have the Throwback helmet on.
