Jaguars drop!

This is a good one. I personally like the Jaguars helmet because it falls squarely in the ‘less is more’ category. The issue, though, is that the logo kind of bleeds into the black background. So it can look like a gold blob with black dots and a few white stripes. The white helmet highlights the logo in a more effective way.

Jacksonville now has a factory helmet for all of the team’s helmet styles. Unless one counts the 1995-2012 design, which is available in the 2-bar, traditional, chrome and revolution styles. Worn as a throwback in 2024, it’s not available in the speed style.

Who’s left?

There are now 16 left for the 2025 limited editions. I bet we will at least see the Cardinals, Browns, Broncos, Texans, and Colts 2024 alternates this summer. I doubt we will see 2023 or earlier ones as Riddell manufactured the 2025 limited editions in September 2024 (except for the Eagles).

  1. I’ve been hoping for a Jacksonville helmet release so I could address a possible gap in their helmet history. While the Jaguars continued to wear a black helmet with the original logo through 2012, in 2009 they made a subtle change to the shell. Under the previous ownership of Wayne Weaver, they streamlined the uniforms and with the help of Reebok and a now-defunct company called JDSU, came up with what was called SpectraFlair Bright Silver pigment for the helmet shell. While the helmet color was still black, it now had a special feature that whenever light shined on the helmet, it gave off a teal shine. The 2009-2012 Jaguars pages on the Gridiron Uniform Database also displays this subtle change on the helmets. I think this was actually a better look than what they did with the 2013-2017 helmet once Shad Khan bought the team and squirted mustard over everything, by adding a lot more gold to the entire uniform, including the bizarre gold/black gradient of the helmet, which was never popular.

At any rate, to my knowledge, Riddell never released an actual reproduction of this helmet. I know the Jags throwback mini helmets that they sell are always labeled as 1995-2012 when technically they should be 1995-2008. Maybe it was too difficult or perhaps too expensive to reproduce this technology on the pocket size helmets? I did see a Jaguars Revolution helmet for sale on ebay a couple months ago with a 2010 stamp on the inside of the helmet, which would’ve been the second year of the SpectraFlair Era, but it looked like the basic black shell.

Here’s a link I got from the 2009 team’s Wikipedia page to the Jags Media Guide that explains the uniform and helmet changes. There’s a large picture of the helmet displayed on the over page.

As for the remaining 16 helmet releases this year, it was announced that five teams will introduce alternate helmets sometime in the coming months: Steelers (rumored to be gold), Browns (possibly brown), Chargers (rumored to be powder blue or navy blue), Saints (either redesign of the black helmet or more accurate old gold for the throwback) and Commanders (possibly a redesign of the black alternate that was a recent Limited Edition release). My guess is that a few alternates or throwbacks (like the Steelers, Saints or even Packers or Vikings) worn in 2024 will slip through the cracks and never get a release.
